Men's Harrington Leather Jacket

What a Harrington actually is

The shape came out of Manchester in 1937 as a golf and motor-racing jacket: short in the body, elasticated at the waist and cuff, a soft point collar you could turn up when the wind picked up, and a zip that ran clean to the neck. Nothing about it was designed to look tough. It was designed to be got on and off quickly and to sit flat under a coat.

Ours is that shape in 100% real lambskin, and on some pieces cowhide where we want more body. Shirt collar, zip closure, two side pockets, and either an open hem or a snap cuff depending on the jacket. Real leather, no faux or PU, so it softens with wear and holds its shape for years instead of cracking after two winters.

Why the collar changes what you can wear it with

This is the whole argument for a Harrington. A biker jacket has lapels that fight a shirt collar, so you end up wearing it over a tee or not at all. A shirt collar sits neatly on top of your own, which means the jacket works over an oxford, a knitted polo or a fine-gauge crew without looking like you've thrown a costume on.

That puts it somewhere between casual and smart. Not as formal as a leather blazer, but you can wear it somewhere a blazer would be too much and a biker would be too loud. If you only own one leather jacket and you also have to turn up to things, this is the shape to own.

Where it sits against the other cuts

A trucker shares the shirt collar but buttons instead of zipping and sits boxier through the body. A bomber has no collar to speak of and a heavier ribbed hem. A cafe racer swaps the point collar for a flat band and reads sportier. The Harrington is the quietest of the four.

Colours

Black is the default and the easiest thing to own. Cognac is the one we sell most of in this shape, because a warm brown reads softer against a shirt than black does and it ages visibly at the cuffs and elbows. Chocolate and rub-off browns are the darker option. Beyond the neutrals we run the Harrington in dark green, blue, burgundy wax, beige and off white.

Fit and care

The Harrington is meant to finish at the hip with the waist sitting close, so it can look wrong a size too big in a way a bomber doesn't. Measure your chest and match the size guide rather than ordering your usual label size. Layering a jumper underneath is worth one size up, not two. Returns are free for 30 days.

Care is minimal: no direct heat, air dry if it gets caught in rain, condition once or twice a year. The care guide covers it properly. Everything else is in the full men's leather jacket range.
